General Motors' decision to keep 5,000 workers in its Renaissance Center headquarters in downtown Detroit is a boost for the city's business district, and one that must be built on.
GM had planned to consolidate more workers at its Tech Center in Warren, but decided to keep them downtown on the promise of tax breaks and other incentives. GM's new chairman, Ed Whitacre Jr., and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing worked out many of the details during private meetings at the North American International Auto Show.
It's a big break for Detroit. The city's downtown is hanging on by its fingertips.
An estimated 48 buildings sit vacant in the central business district. Dozens more are only nominally occupied, with just a few floors of multi-story office towers in use.
