Detroit bids for wind turbine project

The city of Detroit and NextEnergy have made a bit to bring a wind turbine project to the city.

The city of Detroit and the nonprofit NextEnergy business accelerator are hoping to win a U.S. Department of Energy wind turbine testing plant for the city.

Final applications for the project are due by Tuesday. While the number of jobs might be modest, numbering in the dozens, winning the project would represent a big step toward realizing the dream of making metro Detroit a center of alternative energy research and development.

“It’s a major win for Detroit if we get it,” Keith Cooley, chief executive of NextEnergy, said today.

George Jackson, president of the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., agreed. “Alternative energy is one of our target industries,” he said this week.
