WYANDOTTE: City awarded $7.8M in federal funds for foreclosure stimulus

At a time of continuing grim economic news, city officials are elated over receiving $7.8 million in federal stimulus money.

Shaun Donovan, U.S. secretary of Housing and Urban Development, was in Detroit on Thursday afternoon to announce that almost $224 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money is being awarded to the state, local governments and land banks to acquire and redevelop foreclosed properties in 12 cities, including Wyandotte.

The other communities are Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Flint, Saginaw, Pontiac, Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Benton Harbor.

The grant was awarded through HUD’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which provides emergency assistance to state and local governments to stabilize neighborhoods and stem the decline in value of neighboring houses.
