Summer may be gone, but not the farmers' market in Lincoln Park

No longer a summer-only sight, farmers markets, like the one opened earlier this month in downtown Lincoln Park, are hawking their fresh and local goods during the cold season as well.

The Lincoln Park Winter Farmers' Market opened Jan. 8 and again Jan. 22 and will run for two weekends each in February, the 5th and 12th, and in March on the 4th and the 18th. Hours are 12:30-4:30.

The market moved indoors to the Ikaros Hall, 1677 Fort Street, one block north of Southfield Road.

Just under a dozen vendors are selling produce, either fresh or summer and fall harvests or frozen and vacuumed packed. Also on offer are southeast Michigan grown and made honey, maple syrup, jams, baked goods and Wyandotte-based Kettle Corn of Michigan, and hand-made jewelry as well.

Organizers say it's already proving to be a draw for summer market regulars who missed the farmer's market as well for residents and visitors to nearby business, such as the Park restaurant, which is next door to the market.

According to the Michigan Farmers Market Association, Lincoln Park's winter market is the 34th to start in the state.

“As a customer, I've enjoyed shopping at the Lincoln Park Farmers’ Market and didn't want it to come to an end. Winter markets have been sprouting up all over the country. Why not in Lincoln Park?", says Christopher Dardzinski, organizer of the Lincoln Park Winter Farmers Market. "A lot of people are committed to buying locally, eating locally and supporting farmers."
