Ann Arbor finishing up work on sculpture park renovations

Work on Ann Arbor’s Sculpture Park is largely done.

New trees? Check.
New streetlights and fresh brick pavers? Check.
New tables and chairs? Double check.

Refurbished Herberling sculpture? Check back in a few weeks.

The 18-foot-tall sculpture by former Ann Arbor artist David Herberling is still being worked on and city officials are not sure when it will be returned to its original condition. In the mean time, everything else in the park at Catherine, Fourth and
Detroit streets in Kerrytown (a half block south of the Farmer's Market) is finished and open to the public.

Laura Meisler, the outreach coordinator for People's Food Co-op, which overlooks the park says she really likes the way the park looks now and that it provided "a really
nice face lift" for that area.

Meisler especially likes the relaid pavers, which
has levelled the ground beneath the new portable cafe tables.

"I think it's a big improvement from what we had before," Meisler
says. "It looks really nice."

The city and the DDA are investing nearly $200,000 into a renovation that began earlier this summer. The city opened the plaza 30 years ago. It is centered on the Herberling Sculpture, and serves as a link for pedestrians between downtown and Kerrytown.
