New Dorm starts construction at UofM

Construction has begun on the newest dorm at the University of Michigan.

Work began on The Courtyards on the university’s North Campus last week. Construction is expected to wrap up by the fall of 2008 in time for new students to take up residence in the private dorm that academic year. The 896-unit development will be located on Plymouth Road near Broadway Street immediately adjacent to North Campus. It’s owned by Education Realty Trust, Inc.

The dorm will feature apartments that have one bedroom and one bathroom, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, threes bedrooms and three bathrooms and four bedrooms and four bathrooms. They will be in a series of three- and five-story buildings.

Amenities for the units include private bedrooms, bathrooms in fully furnished apartments with full-sized kitchen appliances. There will also be washers and dryers in each apartment overlooking park-like courtyards. The development will also have a cyber café, recreational facilities, tanning capsules, study and meeting rooms, a music practice room with a piano, an outdoor badminton court and a mini movie theater.

"Michigan is one of America’s premier public universities," said Bob Hetherington, spokesman for Education Realty Trust. "The physical site and location of the real estate is excellent in relation to North Campus."
