U of M holds urban redevelopment seminar

The University of Michigan will host an urban-redevelopment seminar "The Future of Development: How to Make Money and Make a Difference in Urban Redevelopment" on Friday, March 2nd.

The lecture will focus on creating downtown vitality through small mixed-use developments. It will feature a group of commercial real estate development professionals with proven track records in urban redevelopment. They will talk about successful strategies during the day-long workshop. The course will present tactics for identifying downtown development opportunities, assembling land, securing government approvals and financing, and strategies for maximizing return on investment.

"The timing for this seminar is ideal because auto-dependent, single-purpose development has high vacancies and difficulty obtaining public approvals," said Peter Allen, an Ann Arbor developer and member of UofM’s adjunct faculty who will lead the seminar.

"Opportunistically, revitalizing downtowns is a key component of every community’s master plan," ASllen adds. "The idea of doing compact, pedestrian oriented, mixed-use development is a very viable option as demonstrated by two key demographics – the age 25 to 30 niche of young, creative professionals, and empty-nesters. These two niches are driving the demand for walkable urbanity development. This course is geared specifically for how to successfully develop small, mixed-use downtown projects."

The workshop will be presented in conjunction with the UofM Real Estate Club from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UofM’s Ross School of Business. The seminar costs $300, or $275 if paid before February 27. To register, email realestateed@umich.edu.

Participants are encouraged to attach a short biography outlining their real estate involvement.
