UofM child-care building gets go ahead to start construction

Work is set to begin soon on building the University of Michigan's Towsley Children's House after the university's regents approved the project.

The $8-million new center will be located on the same space as the current center on South Forest Street on the university's central campus.

The 22,500-square-foot facility will serve up to 142 children, doubling the current building's capacity. The university's Children's Center for Working Families and Pound House will be consolidated into the new building.

The new center is part of the university's Child Care Initiative, which is working to renovate and expand existing facilities throughout campus.

The facilities have reached maximum capacity even though demand for child care among university faculty, staff and students has steadily increased in recent few years.

The university has retained Troy-based architectural firm Integrated Design Solutions to design the facility and is working on the new structure's design. A construction schedule has not yet been set.
