What goes up... is probably doing so in downtown Birmingham. At least, that's the case with the Bank of America building development, which toes the dividing line between Birmingham's downtown and Triangle districts.
The new designs for the mixed-use development call for upping the floor count from three to five, and construction beginning September. The project will replace strip malls and surface parking lots bordered by Woodward, Brown and Peabody streets.
The 84,000-square-foot structure will house a Bank of America branch on the ground floor. The second floor will be set aside for a health club, while the third, fourth and fifth floors will be used for office space.
"We're talking to several investment firms right now and we hope to sign one soon," says Harry Blackward, developer of the Bank of America building.
The new structure will feature a drive-through section for the bank and some more space for a restaurant on the ground floor. The developer also wants to widen the sidewalk on the Brown side to make room for more trees.
