Michigan ranked 12th for bike friendliness

The League of American Bicyclists seems to like Michigan, at least more than 38 other states. The organization ranked the Great Lakes State No. 12 in its national survey of bicycle friendliness.

"Many Michigan communities have incorporated bike lanes on local roads and constructed hundreds of miles of bike trails with assistance from numerous state departments and nonprofit resources," says Joshua DeBruyn, bicycle and pedestrian coordinator for the Michigan Department of Transportation. "This creates an infrastructure that encourages bicycling."

The survey ranking is based on Michigan's placement in six categories. It placed 7th in education, tied for 8th in infrastructure, tied for 14th in planning, tied for 15th in enforcement, tied for 19th in policies and programs and came in 35th in legislation.

The league equates how friendly a state is for bicyclists to its quality of life. It points out that encouraging more bicycling helps prevent climate change, ease traffic congestion, cuts down on obesity rates, improves traffic safety and creates economic development opportunities.
