Transit Riders United educates leaders on mass transit

Metro Detroiters want more transportation options and better mass transit, but the people at Transportation Riders United don't believe the area's leaders are as responsive to that as they should be.

That's why TRU is organizing local residents to inform elected leaders about the importance of paying more attention to maintaining and improving mass transit in Metro Detroit. The mass transit advocacy group plans to hold a meeting tonight in downtown Detroit to organize the first of those efforts with its Detroit Transit Volunteer Kickoff.

"We are kicking off a broad organizing strategy," says Megan Owens, executive director of Transportation Riders United. "We know there are a lot of people who support transit or want to but public officials drag their feet. This April, we're going to do a big push to educate our elected officials."

This will include advocating for big projects like the Woodward light-rail line and Detroit-Ann Arbor commuter-rail line. Protecting and enhancing the existing bus system will also be a big part of this education process.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Guardian Building, 500 Griswold St. For information, send an email to hyman.joshua.s@gmail.com or call (313) 963-8872.
