The type of progress we want to see and can expect to see in 2008 will be on display at the Transportation Riders United annual meeting on Jan. 28.
The 6:30 p.m. meeting in the Boll Family YMCA in downtown Detroit will feature talks by mass transit heavy hitters like Regional Transit Coordinating Council CEO John Hertel, state Rep Marie Donigan (D-Royal Oak) and SMART's new GM Hayes Jones. Together they will detail what mass transit changes and initiatives Metro Detroiters should look for this year.
Hertel, the region's transit czar, will share his vision for the future of transit in the region and his efforts to develop a regional transit plan. State Rep. Donigan, chair of the state House Subcommittee on Public Transit, will discuss her plans to develop state policy to improve and promote mass transit. Jones will speak about SMART's growing ridership, future goals, and expected improvements for this year and beyond.
Other speakers that will be announced later will also be in attendance to tell us what we can expect this year. But those in attendance and access to TRU's Web site will have the opportunity to decide what they want to see happen in mass transit this year. TRU will be listening to audience opinions and is holding and online poll to establish its goals for this year.
