State celebrates grand opening of $17 million Welcome Center in Southwest Detroit

The State of Michigan will celebrate the grand opening of its newest Welcome Center, near the Ambassador Bridge, on August 22.

The ceremony is set for 10 a.m. and will honor Gloria Jeff, the Michigan Department of Transportation's former director. Jeff, a Detroit native, was the first woman and the first African-American to lead the department. The plans for the Welcome Center and the Mercado across the street were cemented during her tenure.

Tenants at the $17 million Welcome Center building include DTE Energy and MDOT.
