The
Detroit Mexicantown International Welcome Center is being dedicated on
Aug. 22, marking a start to the building's "welcoming" function, which
includes neighborhood information and restrooms.
The ceremony is
set for 10 a.m. and will honor Gloria Jeff, the Michigan Department of
Transportation's former director. Jeff, a Detroit native, was the first
woman and the first African-American to lead the department. The plans
for the Welcome Center and the Mercado across the street were cemented
during her tenure.
Tenants at the $17 million Welcome Center building include DTE Energy and MDOT.
Initially,
the Welcome Center will be open weekdays during business hours, but
Brenda Peek, spokesperson for the agency, expects the hours to expand
substantially after the Gateway Project construction is complete.
