Wireless Washtenaw expands coverage area to southwest section of county

Easy and free wireless Internet service is making its way out to rural Washtenaw County now that 20/20 Communications has expanded its coverage area from 2 to 28 square miles, primarily in the southwest section of the county.

The expanded coverage area brings free Wi-Fi into parts of Freedom, Sharon, Manchester and Bridgewater townships as part of the Wireless Washtenaw project. The project's pilot phase covered parts of Ann Arbor, Manchester and Saline. Ann Arbor’s section is based in its downtown core, covering parts of streets like Main, State and Liberty.

Organizers behind the initiative expect to make all of Washtenaw County wireless by this fall. The county covers 720 square miles and is home to approximately 340,000 people. Oakland and Macomb counties are also pushing forward similar programs this year.
