Ann Arbor to celebrate Earth Day at U-M Matthaei Botanical Gardens

A consortium of environmental groups known as Environmental Education Network of Washtenaw County has planned a day of family fun at University of Michigan's Matthaei Botanical Gardens in celebration of Earth Day on April 22.

Taking place from noon – 4 p.m., the event encourages attendees to wander Matthaei's miles of trails, view its exquisite outdoor gardens and visit the more than 40 exhibitors. "All of the exhibitors have some type of environmental focus, whether that be education, sustainability or alternative fuels," says Barbara Major, the volunteer coordinator for the botanical gardens and the Nichols Arboretum, who cites the National Wildlife Federation, the Ecology Center and Recycle Ann Arbor as examples.

Children receive a "passport" upon entry that encourages them to visit the exhibitors' tables to collect stamps. "They can turn it in at the end and get a prize," explains Major.

At 2 p.m., there will be an All-Species Parade with costumes representing diverse species of animals and plants. One of the activity tables will allow visitors to make their own costume and have their face painted to encourage parade participation.

Other events include music from Bubbleman and Joe Reilly, a bird of prey presentation and a display of alternative fuel vehicles.

Admission to the event is free, although regular entry fees will be charged to enter the indoor conservatory. For more information, call the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at 734.647.7600.
