Farmington Hills-based Jervis B. Webb Company and Livonia-based Alberici Constructors have been awarded a $29.6 million contract from Northwest Airlines for expansions and improvements to McNamara Terminal's baggage handling system at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne Country Airport.
The team will install explosion detection systems, more than 1.2 miles of conveyors and modifications to the baggage handling control system.
An updated security system, which Webb has installed in more than 50 airports around the world, will eliminate the need for baggage screening in the airport's lobby.
In a statement, Kenneth Hamel, Webb’s vice president of airport systems, said, "Passenger volume at the McNamara Terminal has risen steadily over the past several years. Expansion of the automated baggage screening system was needed in order to handle the increased volume of checked bags. We are happy to provide this new system, which will improve baggage handling operations at our home airport.”
Webb is a company, founded in 1919, that specializes in integrated systems for automotive, airport, manufacturing and warehouse industries. Headquartered in Farmington Hills, it operates manufacturing facilities in Boyne City, MI and Carlisle, SC, as well as in Canada, India and China. Alberici, the nation's 39th largest construction company, previously partnered with Webb in 2005 for a prior baggage-handling project at Detroit-Metro.
