Keeping warm in this weather is hard on the environment. Thermostat settings keep even the best-insulated houses sucking away at the energy teat almost 24-7.
And that's not even mentioning stores and offices that keep their settings at 75 degrees.
Getting away from this weather can expend even more energy; we've all heard about how horrible flying is for the environment.
But here are a couple of suggestions. Take a train to Chicago or Toronto. Mass transit is the least offensive mode of transportation bar none. Sure, they aren't any warmer than we are, but sometimes just a change of scene can do a body good.
If you are headed Up North, consider Crystal Mountain, which is powering one of its high speed chairlifts
with wind credits. OK, not the most impressive example of environmental stewardship -- I'd say the ski industry as a whole has lots of work to do on that front -- but it is a modest beginning.
And if you are in-town, stick with cross country skiing;
Kensington Metro Park has rentals. (Hopefully, you are carpooling in a hybrid to get there...)
Metromode would welcome ideas from readers on other ways to beat the winter blues that are at least a little green.
Send them our way, and we'll share some of the best in a couple of weeks.
