(Almost) guilt-free grilling

One of a holiday weekend's greatest joys is firing up the grill. But the environmentally sensitive among us might wonder, "Am I killing the earth by grilling this sausage?"

Short answer: Not really.

If you have a solar-powered grill you are hereby absolved of any and all bar-b-que guilt.

If your grill uses natural gas or propane, you can breathe easy: you are actually using fewer resources than cooking with your stove or oven.

But, charcoal and wood-burning grills are pretty toxic. Not what the bar-be-que purists probably want to hear, but the soot is actually quite significant. Plus there's loss of forest with both fuels, and charcoal production is also a high emission endeavor. The Rainforest Alliance Smartwood program has certified Char-Broil products, so at least you know the forests killed for your burgers were harvested sustainably.

Fire 'em up!
