Green Building for Building Professionals

Local building professionals can enroll in a Building Industry Association of Southeast Michigan two-day seminar on green building. The class will be held in Farmington Hills on May 8 and 9.

This is the first green course to be offered by the local BIA, and will be taught by Chuck Breidenstein. Breidenstein, who recently became accredited in green building techniques from the national BIA, is a training consultant for the building industry who is also certified in aging-in-place construction.

Sheila Denstaedt, the organization's meetings and activities coordinator, says the class' target audience is residential builders and contractors that are "trying to learn more about green building." She points out that builders in Chicago and on the west side of the state have already become conversant in the language of green building, and that Southeast Michigan is "just starting to catch up."

Breidenstein will discuss how builders can incorporate green building principles while maintaining an eye on the bottom line. His topics will include energy- and resource-efficiency, indoor air quality and long-term maintenance.
