Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. announced that it would invest up to $1 billion in the next four years. Though headquartered in Northern Michigan, the state-wide impications for the company's expansion are significant. In particular,
The Dow Corning subsidiary, which is also co-owned by two Japan-based firms, Shin Etsu Handotai Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Materials Corp., expects to begin the expansion by 2010, and hopes to increase the company's total annual output of polycrystalline silicon to 36,000 metric tons, a 90 percent increase.
The expansion is expected to generate up to 250 full-time direct jobs, as well as an equal number of contracted positions upon completion.
While the expansion is constructed, nearly 800 temporary construction contractors will be needed.
Dow Corning's Midland site will also receive an expansion, and is expecting to seek new hires as well.
Video footage from last Wednesday’s press conference, where the announcement was made, is available at Michigan.org/dow. The video contains clips contain remarks from Governor Granholm.
