Middle school kids design cities of the future

Dewey-eyed, idealistic middle-schoolers, designing a futuristic city - it sounds adorable, but these lads and lasses are more than just mediagenic photo ops. The contestants in the Engineeering Society of Detroit's Future Cities competition researched nanotech, water and power technologies - and, one hopes, came up with a few green solutions that grown-up engineers might pay heed.

In the end, Royal Oak Middle School took first place in the event -- and the trip to Washington, D.C. for the national competition. Their city was a domed habitat on the east coast of Siberia, reinforced by carbon nanotubes that also served as wiring. Their finalist presentation was a winner as well: a game show titled "Are You Smarter Than An Engineer?"
