Comcast expanding online presence, to add 500 jobs

High-speed Internet and Cable provider Comcast, which added 500 jobs to Michigan in 2006, plans to add 500 more positions in the upcoming year as the company expands its technology and online presence.

The company, which has invested $2.6 billion in growing technologies "wants to stay on the cutting edge, " said Jerome Espy, vice president of communications at Comcast's regional office.

"We are trying to make Comcast.net a more content-rich site, " said Espy. The site also offers clips of other trailers and from television shows, such as Fox's American Idol.

This is all part of Comcast's "fresh new look, " said Espy, who added that the company wishes to continue to appeal to younger audiences.

One way the company hopes to do this is by adding a younger company spokesperson, which they are currently looking for as part of their "Comcast Casting Call! " promotion, a Michigan-only contest aimed at children between the ages of 11 and 15.  Ten finalists will appear on Fox2 Detroit, auditioning live on March 29.

The winner will get a contract with the company, as well as an HDTV, a one-year subscription to Comcast Digital Cable with their ON DEMAND service, a home computer, a one-year subscription to Comcast High Speed Internet, a digital home phone, and a one-year subscription to Comcast Digital Voice.

To date the site has registered 4000 applications.

Comcast also recently started a new promotion with Columbia Pictures for the third installment in the Spider-Man franchise, offering the trailer, behind-the-scenes-footage and other exclusives at www.spiderman3oncomcast.com. In addition, the company has also started working with Ziddio.com, an interactive video site similar to YouTube.
