Functional Brands takes Life2Go national, plans to triple in size

Just before the words Red Bull and Monster became household names, a chef named Jimmy Schmidt at the Rattlesnake Club in Detroit had an idea for a similar energy drink.

He built what is now known as Life2Go for LeMans racing crews eight years ago to help provide them with stamina and focus. Today Roseville-based Functional Brands hopes to take Life2Go national within the next year.

It's already sold in all Meijer stores, Costco locations in Michigan and every Lifetime Fitness business in the U.S. And that's just in the two years Functional Brands has been working the product.

"We have grown incrementally over the last few years," says Tom Morley, president of Functional Brands.

The firm has expanded to two full-time employees and another dozen independent contractors. It hopes to triple in size over the next two years at it breaks onto the scene in both the U.S. and Canada.

It the stars align for the company, Morley expects Life2Go to become a household name just like Red Bull and Monster.
