Local indie film to play Detroit film fest

"Layla's Girl" an independent film produced entirely in Detroit, will be a featured selection of the Women of Color International Film Festival in Detroit on April 14.

The film, which details the story of Carla Avery (played by newcomer LaShae Martin) chronicles the story of a young woman who visits her estranged family after the death of her mother.

The film, which was an official selection at this year's Waterfront Film Festival and Urban Mediamaker's Film Festival, began production in 2003. Employing mostly residents of Detroit and the surrounding area, producer Alisa R. Lomax said the biggest challenge was a lack of financing when it came time to cut the film.

"We had to cut it ourselves through trial and error, " said Lomax.
"It was a great learning experience in the long run." The producer and director Nicole Sylvester plan to release the DVD soon.

The film's cast "includes: Theo Williamson, Walter Harris, Rhonda Freya English and Richard Gant, who has appeared in "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,"  "Rocky V," and "NYPD Blue."
