Microposite expands to 27 people within two years

As Marc Carlson tells it, there hasn’t been a major innovation in the siding industry within the last 20 years. That leaves a sizable opportunity for his company Microposite to build a big business by capturing a small piece of that $10 billion pie.

The Auburn Hills-based firm's key to opening that door is its wood-like siding. Carlson, the president and CEO of Microposite, sees it as the next big thing in residential construction because of its green credentials.

Microposite claims its composite material, launched in February, is more durable, allows for greater insulation and only takes a little energy to build. The boards look like similar pieces of wood and weigh about the same. They are distributed by BlueLinx Holdings, the largest building materials distributor in the U.S.

"They buy everything we can make," Carlson says. "We have more demand than capacity."

Which explains why the company has grown to 27 people and a couple of interns within the last two years. The company hopes to add more people to its Auburn Hills plant as it sells more product.

It's goal is to capture 1-2 percent of the industry's market share within the next 3-5 years. That would give it one big chunk of change to chew on.
