Octillion, Oakland University work to develop new solar technology

Auburn Hills-based Octillion is teaming up with Oakland University to develop the next generation of solar panels – transparent film that can be sprayed onto windows that will harness the sun's energy.

Scientists from both Octillion and Oakland University will work on the company's NanoPower Window technology. They will also collaborate to find other applications for the nanotechnology as part of a 2-year agreement.

Octillion is working on a technology that sprays silicon nanoparticles onto glass, an important process in developing solar technology. Once mastered this new process will allow the company to quickly and efficiently adhere the electricity-generating film on glass, a typically cumbersome and time-consuming task.

The technology is still in the development stage but showing enough promise that the company's leaders hope to use it and other alternative energy technologies as the main cogs in turning the firm into a company with a number of spin-offs under it.

Octillion employs 11 people. It hopes to bring a hand full more on board within a few years as it develops its technology.
