Ultimate Hydroforming grows, adds staff in Sterling Heights

Ultimate Hydroforming has been pressing, bending and shaping metal in Metro Detroit since the late 1970s. Even as other similar firms feel the pinch of today's tough economy, the Sterling Heights-based firm is growing.

How does it do this in this age of globalization and automotive meltdown? Diversification. The company already had done work in commercial, aerospace and medical industries and it recently expanding into alternative energy.

"Right now we're in the solar field," says Shane Klyn, operations manager for Ultimate Hydroforming.

That extra growing field has allowed the company to add 15 new people and reinvest $4 million in its facilities last year. It's currently working on a 7,000-square-foot addition and expects its sales to go up another 10 percent this year, primarily on the growth of alternative energy. Oh, and it expect to keep hiring to.

Not too bad for a bunch of metal benders.
