U-M Dearborn summit shows off growth industries

Old economy, meet new economy! New economy is here to help.

That's basically the introduction leaders in Southeast Michigan are hoping to make between the area's struggling manufacturers and burgeoning new economy start-ups. Those introductions will be taking place at a regional summit on Wednesday, April 15, at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

A who's who of the region's economic development agencies will help point manufacturers toward sectors that are growing. Gone are the automotive metal bending and plastic molding of the past. Here are the alternative energy, aerospace and homeland security opportunities that are growing today.

"We have a world renowned manufacturing base," says Robert Ficano, executive for Wayne County. "While the downturn in the automotive industry has been painful, it has opened the door for our manufacturers to take advantage of opportunities in other high growth industries."

The economic development agencies attending include Ann Arbor SPARK, Detroit Economic Growth Corp, Wayne County's Economic Development Growth Engine and Monroe County Industrial Development Corp.

The summit will be held in the Social Sciences Building Auditorium, 4901 Evergreen. There will be presentations from a number of high-growth sectors. For information, click here or contact Rosemarie Di Rita at rosemarie@roxburygroup.com or (313) 530-7881.
