Biodiesel was introduced to Wayne County as an alternative form of fuel in June 2006. Since then biodiesel use has topped one million gallons with most of it in Wayne County going toward the Department of Public Services fleet.
In 2005, Global biodiesel production climbed to 3.8 million tons. About 85 percent of the fuels production came from the European Union, although plants are beginning to pop up across the United States.
