More LEED-certified buildings on the way to Oakland County

LEED-certified building projects may be the future, and Oakland is looking to get ahead of the curve.

To date, only four buildings in Oakland County are certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. There will be more in the next year or two, as dozens have been registered with U.S. Green Building Council and presumably are on their way to certification.

Statewide, 239 are registered and 76 are certified.

"Owners often say they want to be like LEED but not necessarily certified," said Jim Shankin, preconstruction director in Skanska USA's Southfield office. "They simply don't know enough about LEED to know if they should or should not be certified."
