Private groups proving key to moving Detroit forward

Although government continues to play a role in development and progress, recent years have seen quasi-public and private agencies like the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. play a big role in Detroit's comeback.

"Business can't be done the way it was 10, 15 years ago," said Faye Alexander Nelson, president of the conservancy. "Communities are finding themselves in a much different situation now from the economic standpoint. Everyone has had to step back and really focus on the 'we': 'What are we going to do to create sustainable communities?' "
