Elementary students and LTU partner on 'city of the future'

Lawrence Tech University and metro Detroit elementary students team up to build the "city of the future."

Hundreds of metro Detroit's newest engineers descended upon Lawrence Technological University last week to build the city of the future.

The "engineers," actually 350 students from Eastover Elementary School in Bloomfield Township, built their Green Box City from cereal containers, cardboard tubes and occasional bits of string.

It might have been a city of scraps, but that was part of the plan.

"It's about sustainability, about building a green city," said Glen LeRoy, dean of Southfield-based LTU's College of Architecture and Design, and a leading proponent of Box City's hands-on style of education.
