OAKLAND COUNTY - Oakland County Parks is challenging teens with new award-winning outdoor day camps, trips and special events.
Teens Outside Great Adventures offers teens the chance to develop and
strengthen outdoor adventure skills. T.O.G.A. was recognized by the
National Forum on Children and Nature as one the country's best
initiatives for connecting kids with the outdoors.
The Big Chill, set for March 14, includes a bonfire, snowshoeing,
cross-country skiing, snow boating, snow hut building, winter dodge
ball and more.
The Frisbee Fest, on April 11, highlights disc golf, ultimate Frisbee, and other Frisbee sports.
"Kids don't have to live online in a virtual world," Derenda Howard,
recreation program supervisor - outdoor recreation & camps, said.
"Research shows outdoor play has a positive impact on the physical,
emotional and mental health of youth."
The Outdoor Foundation, with support from local organizations, and the
National Recreation & Park Association, provided seed funding to
Oakland County Parks for its T.O.G.A. program, targeting ages
12-17.
The teen events run from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Addison Oaks County Park.
Cost is $15/person. Transportation is provided by Oakland County Parks.
