Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson highlighted new accomplishments in country government and discussed a possible run for state governor in his 2009 State of the County address. Patterson's Feb. 10 speech noted a series of new initiatives planned for Oakland County in 2007, including the Oakland Edge hockey tournament, a move to a three-year budgeting cycle, and expanding efforts to help displaced workers.

His speech, carried live on News/Talk 760 WJR radio, which has a statewide reach, was broadcast at the same time Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a term-limited Democrat, was giving her annual State of the State address to a joint session of the Legislature in Lansing.
Patterson took shots at state policies a number of times during his annual address, particularly “punitive and burdensome tax policies” and the state’s practice of budgeting on a year to year basis, but also spoke of successes in the region and state outside of Oakland County.
And he touted success at legislation that creates an authority to manage Cobo Center in Detroit with a pared back cost for maintenance and expansion and a voting structure that allows the county to scuttle agenda items unfavorable to the county.
