In addition to chalking up $20,000 in costs each, they also generated considerably more carbon dioxide emissions than if they'd travelled on a regular plane or caught the train.
It is against that backdrop and the crisis faced by America's big car manufacturers that the Obama administration – from the President down – lambasted the ailing industry for being out of touch with popular thinking on a number of issues, not least the environment.
GM and its Detroit bedfellows already have more than enough problems to deal with, but with his new policies on car emissions and fuel-efficiency announced last month, President Obama is attempting to green Detroit once and for all.
