UM bringing in top urban designers, architects for 9th annual downtown Detroit workshop

The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is bringing in some of the top architects and urban designers in the country this week as a finale to a yearlong planning process for downtown Detroit.

The ninth annual Detroit Design Workshopp starts Friday and will conclude with a presentation at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29 at the Gem Theatre. The presentation is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

The designers hail from nationally known firms, such as Skidmore Owings and Merrill, LLP (SOM) in Chicago, and universities such as Harvard and the University of Virginia. Local professional architects and experts include Stephen Vogel, dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture; Rainy Hamilton of Hamilton Anderson, and Mark Nickita and Dorian Moore from Archive DS.

The workshop is under the direction of Dean Douglas Kelbaugh of the Taubman College at UM. It is the wrap up of a yearlong market research and planning process for downtown, funded by the C.S. Mott Foundation, the CharterOne Foundation, as well as various Detroit area donors, and sponsored by Downtown Detroit Partnership, Detroit Economic Growth Corp. and DTE Energy.
