A consortium called Southwest Michigan First formed to help Kalamazoo regroup when Pfizer cut 1,200 jobs there in 2003.

Since the 2003 job cuts, 21 startup companies have formed
in the Kalamazoo area, 14 of them in the Southwest Michigan
Innovation Center, a subsidiary of Southwest Michigan First.
All have Pfizer connections, said Ron Kitchens, chief
executive officer of Southwest Michigan First. The companies
employ between 200 and 250 people and none has failed, he
said.
