Alternative energy is making a bigger economic impact in Michigan besides lowering energy bills and clearing out pollution. It's also bringing in big investment from the likes of General Electric.

The multi-national corporation plans to open an advanced manufacturing technology and software center in Visteon's old headquarters in Van Buren Township. The $100 million investment is expected to soon create in excess of 1,100 jobs.

The Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center will focus on alternative energy. The scientists and engineers at the center will focus on developing technologies in the renewable energy, aircraft engine, and gas turbine industries, among others.

The 100,000-square-foot center will employ experts in GE's software development, data architecture, networking, business intelligence, and program management sectors, and will also serve as a training hub for IT workers.

The state is providing more than $60 million in incentives over the next 12 years as part of the deal.
