Heart docs at St. John have technology to read test info at home

Cardiologists at St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit can assess heart attacks faster with new computers that let them read tests remotely.

To speed assessment, emergency department physicians transmit EKG and other patient information immediately to cardiology fellows on call. The investment cost about $8,000.

U-M cardiologists Drs. Mauro Moscucci and Kim Eagle, who coauthored the New England Journal of Medicine study, are working with 22 hospitals to improve heart care and door-to-balloon times. The effort, called the Cardiac Consortium, is funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and its affiliated Blue Care Network through a $540,000 grant this year.
