Inner Sole Group launches orthotic for pregnant women, MaternaSole

For years Lawrence Brown, a podiatrist, noticed that women routinely complained about foot or back pain during a pregnancy but there was little to nothing traditional medicine could do to prevent it. He hopes to have solved that problem with his new business, Inner Sole Group.

"Up to 70 percent of women have foot or back pain," Brown says. "It's usually not attended to. It's just part of being pregnant."

The Centerline-based firm has developed an orthotic designed for pregnant woman called MaternaSole. The orthotic is made of non-breakable air cells that provide support and shock absorption to help a woman's body adapt to her changing body during pregnancy. Brown and a friend who is an obstetrician developed the insole over the last few years.

The insole is being produced in Wyandotte and has hit the market over the last year. Brown would like to begin selling more of them online and in local doctors' offices in the near time.

"My hope is that obstetricians will have this in their office," Brown says.
