Lighthouse Molding diversifies into medical device market

Diversification. It's a word Metro Detroit manufacturers are told to embrace, practice, and practically breathe to survive in the 21st Century. It promises less work in the automotive sector and more in emerging areas, such as alternative energy and medical devices.

Sterling Heights-based Lighthouse Molding is a living example, both in theory and in practice. The electronics manufacturer makes products for the automotive, industrial, and medical device markets, allowing it to expand its personnel count.

"It's critical. You have to find some sort of balance," says Scott Lowes, president of Lighthouse Molding. "The all-eggs-in-one-basket idea doesn't work anymore."

The Macomb-OU INCubator-based firm has grown exponentially over four years. It has consistently grown its revenue at 50 percent annually. "I can see us getting bigger every year," Lowes says.
