Medical device maker Spinal Ventures rounds out executive team

The Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition wasn't only about the money for Spinal Ventures. It was also an opportunity to network with potential investors and partners.

The Brighton-based bio-tech firm made the semifinals of the competition with the hope of winning the top prize of $500,000. It didn't get that; however, the 6-year-old company did make a number of contacts it plans to follow up on in the near future.

"It was an extremely good networking opportunity," says Paul Zwirkoski, CEO of Spinal Ventures. "It was impressive to see the high level of competition and diversity there. I am looking forward to participating next year."

Spinal Ventures specializes in medical devices for surgical product markets, such as those that involve the spine. The company has a team of six employees, four independent contractors, and a summer intern that has helped it nail down patents, secure capital from angel investors, and score supply chain agreements. Four new hires, primarily in its executive team, made this happen.

Next year the company start comprehensive bio-mechanical testing for its latest products. It also hopes to begin clinical testing and start the process of regulatory approval.
