Metro Detroit's 'Aerotropolis' ready for lift off

"Aerotropolis" is the 25,000 acre zone that lies between Detroit Metro Airport and Willow Run Airport. And, finally, after 12 years, the acreage may be ready for development. The hope is that this "hub" will attract and become home to logistics companies, international headquarters, mixed-use developments and spin-off services.

In addition to the airports, transportation assets include roads, like I-75 and I-94; established rail lines; and access to Canada and the Detroit River.

"We're putting together a blueprint on how to connect everything," Blouse added.

The potential to make the connection marks Detroit Metro as unique in the U.S.

"These ideas of aerotropolis in other parts of the country are nonsense except in Detroit," said Mike Boyd, president of The Boyd Group, a Colorado-based aviation forecasting and strategic solutions company. "You can literally draw a line from Windsor to Jackson that's going to be the growth corridor, and the aerotropolis is right in the middle. ... You have a skills base, an industrial base, jobs base and resource base - it does work."
