The reinvention of the auto industry is taking place in offices and shops big and small across Metro Detroit. A small new shop with a big name is aiming at helping do just that in Dearborn.

Geeks, engineers and do-it-yourselfers in Detroit will soon have a chance to take the future of the American automotive industry into their own hands.
TechShop, a chain of do-it-yourself clubs, plans to open a new facility in Detroit next year that will have an emphasis on advancing automotive innovation. Ford has signed on to aid the project by drumming up local investment for the new project and creating a type of showroom for displaying wares created by Average Joes and Janes.
Executives behind the collaboration between TechShop and Ford have billed it as a way to breathe new life into the city’s economy.
"There have been thousands of engineers who do not have positions today, but who have lots of creative talent," said Bill Coughlin, the chief executive at Ford Global Technologies, who oversees the licensing of Ford’s intellectual property. "TechShop, I think, provides an opportunity to turn that talent into reality."
