Fragments: Highland Twp.'s new shop in an old house

It took 18 months to restore the old farmhouse on Milford Road, built in 1878, a few miles outside of downtown Milford.

But for Cheryl Barnes and her sister-in-law Carol Seghi, the owners of Fragments, a new home, garden and gift shop in Highland Township, the store's opening is a dream come true. And one that's 25 years in the making.

Barnes, an interior designer, worked with Highland's Downtown Development Authority to preserve the rural character of the farmhouse. Inside, the papered walls, decorated ceilings and refinished hardwood floors hearken back to a simpler time.

Fragments is stocked with unique products, many of them Michigan-made: from garden ornaments and handmade soaps to hand-knit children's sweaters and jam.

"I've been looking for unique items for years," Barnes said. "I go to art shows and collect people's business cards. We did a lot of online research as well to bring the most unique things to our store. And we're excited to have some equine decor for our local horse lovers."

Fragments is located at 233 S. Milford Road in downtown Highland. Call 248-887-9392 or visit www.Fragmentsstore.com for more information.
