Providence Hospital will spend $5 million to expand and renovate its emergency department in 2011, the first major renovation to the department since 2000.
The project construction includes upgrades to 17,300 sq. ft. of existing space and a 4,055 sq. ft. addition to the emergency area.
According to Dr. Steve McGraw, associate chairman of emergency medicine at Providence, the dimensions of the emergency bay are designed to care for 40,000-45,000 people annually -- Providence currently serves as many as 65,000 patients every year.

The addition planned for the department will house 16 new acute care treatment areas, increasing the number of private treatment bays to 54, which McGraw said will have a huge impact on the experience patients have in the ER.
"This is going to affect the life of my patients while they're in my department a lot better," he said. "It’s one of the things we've needed for a while. The ultimate outcome is going to be enhanced privacy and an enhanced experience."
