SEMCOG Reports Surprise 82% Surge In Housing Permits

It wasn't expected, but Southeast Michigan will take it: an 82% increase in new home construction in 2010, according to SEMCOG. Single-family homes showed the largest increase, while new condominium permits issued doubled from the previous year.

Oakland County's numbers were staggering: an increase of 102% in new builds from 2009.

Gains in all sectors of residential construction can be attributed to several factors: developers offering discounts and constructing less-costly homes, for-sale housing stock reduced, government tax credits extended, and the stabilizing of the economy and job losses in the region.
