Waterford Oaks Greenhouse opens lottery for garden plots

Get your green thumbs ready, gardeners!

Oakland County Parks and Recreation will lease 150 sq. ft. plots at its Waterford Oaks Greenhouse this spring. For $120, interested gardeners will receive a plot package, which includes tilled and tested soil, dumpster access, gardener education programs, and use of the facility's water, restrooms and basic tools. It's located at 1580 Scott Lake Road in Waterford.

"We offer a gardening opportunity for Oakland County residents who do not have the space to plant a vegetable garden," Susana Ditter, greenhouse coordinator for the Waterford Oaks Greenhouse, said. "The goal of the community garden is to provide a safe place to grow, learn and socialize."

Gardeners should plan to spend five hours a week at the greenhouse, which is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

25 plots are available in the greenhouse, and will be assigned by lottery. The greenhouse will host an open house on April 20 at 6 p.m., where lottery forms will be collected. Winners will be notified on May 3.
