Royal Oak native Andy Suriano wins animation Emmy

Royal Oak native Andy Suriano won a Creative Arts Emmy award for the Outstanding Character Design in the Animation category for the Cartoon Network's "Underfist: Halloween Bash."

Excerpt:

"You wouldn't think coming from Michigan that this would be possible," said Suriano, a Royal Oak native who went to school at Detroit's College for Creative Studies. "I'm accepting my award, and the dudes from 'Mad Men' are sitting in the front row."

Although the show is airing today, Suriano made his speech and walked away with the win last weekend at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. A precursor to the "61st Primetime Emmy Awards," the Creative Arts version takes time to honor those who work behind the scenes, such as hairstylists, make-up artists and animators like Suriano.
